Vowel teams are what we are working on! This always seems to be one of the more challenging skills. NIGHTLY PRACTICE AND GOING OVER WORK WITH YOUR KIDS WOULD REALLY BENEFIT THEM! So many phonics rules and unfortunately the pacing doesn't wait for anyone to catch up before introducing a new skill. Students really thrive off the consistent and structured practices at school and would greatly benefit to have that from home too.

Report Cards - will be coming home on Wed. 3/20
This is the 3rd quarter report card for your child's first grade year with me. Only one more to go!
A reminder what the letters/grades mean:
LETTER GRADES & DEFINITIONS:
ACADEMIC GRADES:
BEHAVIOR GRADES:
LET’S MAKE THIS LAST QUARTER TOGETHER REALLY COUNT!! Read with your child LET THEM READ TO YOU!!!! Practice those sentences, sight words, phonics skills, grammar, uppercase/lowercase, handwriting, etc.
THE TIME IS NOW its actually overdue for some, but it’s not too late to start!
HELP YOUR CHILD gain some independent skills and give them some responsibilities too. They would love to show you that they are realizing just how awesome they are and believing in themselves in all the best ways.
In addition, there has been significant challenges with listening skills/following directions for some! As I’ve been telling them, we have to make every day count and put in the hard work so that we can end the year with ALL THE FUN!!!!
This is the 3rd quarter report card for your child's first grade year with me. Only one more to go!
A reminder what the letters/grades mean:
LETTER GRADES & DEFINITIONS:
ACADEMIC GRADES:
- M = Mastery: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill consistently (and independently). Completes daily tasks INDEPENDENTLY and correctly.
- P = Progressing: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill frequently and needs additional teacher support at times. (This grade is where MOST students should still be. If you see this grade then your child is showing adequate progression in that subject area. This is also the grade given when assignments are completed together in class and/or if the subject is learned in more of a whole group setting.)
- E = Emerging: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill rarely or does so with much teacher support. Additional practice is needed. (This grade does NOT mean your child is "below grade level" BUT does show that they are struggling with areas in that subject area. This grade is also applied to assignments that they did not complete correctly even when completed together as a class.) ((Please note: often times this grade might not always reflect complete understanding if they are unable to apply good listening to follow directions.))
- N = Not Evident (This is the grade students receive when they are NOT demonstrating understanding of concept or skill even with one on one teacher support. This is the grade mostly correlated when students are "below grade level".)
BEHAVIOR GRADES:
- E = Excellent
- S = Satisfactory
- N = Needs Improvement
LET’S MAKE THIS LAST QUARTER TOGETHER REALLY COUNT!! Read with your child LET THEM READ TO YOU!!!! Practice those sentences, sight words, phonics skills, grammar, uppercase/lowercase, handwriting, etc.

Each student will have a valentine bag to collect their crafts, treats, and cards throughout the week. I will be providing them the bags to decorate and have for their cards. This will help them to also easily and safely transport it home. If your child would like to hand out Valentine's to his/her classmates, please ensure there is a Valentine for each student. A class list of names will be sent home and is attached below.

$ MONEY = BEHAVIOR CHOICES $
<this will be in addition to the BRAVO beads already in place>
Starting the week we get back, you will start hearing some talk of "earning money in the classroom to spend on coupons" .
The money will be "plastic manipulatives-fake money" used for a hands-on learning process. Students will be getting a pouch to keep their earnings safe at school. There will be a "bank day" for them to exchange coins. (ex. 5 pennies for 1 nickel / 2 nickels for 1 dime / etc.) There will also be a "shopping day" where they will get to choose what they want to spend their money on from the coupon rewards we selected together as class. Start practicing now! Get some change out and have your child work on identifying the different coins by saying its name and value. (penny's worth 1 / nickel's worth 5 / etc.)
For our class:
Students can earn money everyday by:
However…if a student does not make a good choice, money will be taken away (excessive talking, not keeping hands/feet to themselves, incomplete work, consistently off task instead of working, not listening or following directions, etc). It will be each student’s responsibility to keep their money safe and organized in their money pouch. The idea is for students to independently make great choices each day while also practicing one of the first grade's math standards on money. This will also start getting them prepared for second grade!
*Your child must be present in order to earn their money. There will not be “make up cents” if they are absent or checked-out. There is no set amount that every student will have at one time. This is an on-going learning extension for your child to demonstrate their counting and problem solving skills. Bonus pennies are given frequently. Encourage your child to do their personal best throughout the school days!!

Report Cards - Parent/Teacher Conference Night
Well the milestone of your child bringing home their first 1st grade report card has happened! This year seems to be just rolling right along! Hopefully you all received the previous email sent this week. Just thought I'd put the general info on here as well for reference as/if needed throughout the year!
A reminder what the letters mean:
LETTER GRADES & DEFINITIONS:
ACADEMIC GRADES:
- M = Mastery: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill consistently (and independently). Completes daily tasks independently and correctly. [this would be a goal to look forward to towards the end of the year]
- P = Progressing: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill frequently and needs additional teacher support at times. (This grade is where MOST students should be. If you see this grade then your child is showing adequate progression in that subject area. This is also the grade given when assignments are completed together in class.)
At Manatee Elementary we are proud to have a goal of 100% communication to parents!
Please click the button below to choose a time that will accommodate your schedule to discuss your child's progress.
IF none of these dates/times will work please email me so we can do our best to compromise on a meeting time.

StemScopes- Inherited Traits
*SPECIAL REQUEST* Shhhhh, it's a secret! We will be learning about trait inheritance over the next two weeks. I would love to relate this concept to students’ real lives. If possible, please send in a picture of a parent or other family member (aunt, cousin, sibling) from when they were younger. IF sending in actual photo please put it in a labeled envelope with your child's name so that I can return the picture to you. IF easier to email it, that is fine too, just put your child’s name in the subject line. Please do not show your student the picture. We have a great time showing the pictures and matching them to a student in the class. Please submit pictures by Oct. 19. Thank you!
"Plant Parts" we will continue to observe the "grass seeds" that student's planted into their cup. Once the it begins to grow, the grass will appear as "hair" growing from the tops of their heads. It's a really cute project that we will observe, give basic needs to, discuss, and explore with for a couple weeks. Once this lesson/skill comes to an end, students will get to bring these home.

*SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT UPCOMING ASSESSMENTS*
Oct. 10-13 - First Graders will be taking Quarter 1 Brevard Benchmark Assessment paper/pencil at school
Oct. 10 - Students will be taking the Quarter 1 Reveal District Math Assessment on the ipads at school
*Due to the testing days Benchmark Reading Unit2 Week2 will be spread over the course of 2 weeks on non-testing days.
**PARENTS: to best help your child do their best on these tests please-please-please allow students to get a GOOD NIGHT'S REST and provide a HEALTHY DIET! These 2 things have a significant effect on their daily performance at school. Also, please remind them to apply their very best listening skills so that they can follow step-by-step directions along with demonstrating personal best efforts. One of the major things students struggle with is getting through these tasks independently. >Yes, I will be reading scripted directions and explaining what to do BUT they will have to just try their best to figure out the answers. >Yes, these scores and how they did WILL be shared with you. While these assessments are NOT the only data that is used for grading, it is considered and factored in when formulating overall subjective grades. These will be giving us a baseline of where each child is academically to better understand their strengths and weaknesses for instructional purposes.

Timeline Project DUE Friday, Oct. 6
We learned about timelines last week. Students are asked to develop a timeline of his/her life; they may use photos or draw pictures. *Students should do all the writing on the project. The writing does not have to be lengthy, it can be as simple as a label to their picture. They will be the ones presenting the project in class, so it would be helpful for them to be part of the process! A letter has been sent home for you to take a look at the directions and expectations. Timelines are due on or before Oct-6 to receive full points.
Students will be presenting their timelines in class throughout the week of Oct. 9-13.

Exciting news: In the yellow folder coming home today is information about our first Field Trip.
- Things to note:
- The date of our field trip will not be until November 29. All first grade will be going together.
- October 13 is the DUE DATE for the field trip forms, money, and lunch preference paper.
- The cost will $6 per student (exact change only please)
- We are going to the Titusville Playhouse to see the performance of Go, Dog, Go! Live on stage.
- We will be wearing the new Manatee t-shirts (if your child does not have one, they are on sale in the front office)
- We will be taking the school bus there and back.
- We will be eating lunch there. Students have the option to “bring a bagged lunch from home” or “one from the school”. This is where you will need to fill out that portion of the form coming home.
- Yes- we will be needing 2 chaperones. IF you are registered and available/interested in volunteering … at this time all you need to do is email me to express your interest *THEN* your name will go in to the bucket for a chance to be selected. I WILL email once this process takes place. Thank you for understanding. There will be other options coming soon for another chance to enjoy some fun with our class.

Math: *update*: some students are struggling with identifying tens/ones place in 2-digit numbers. It's also been a challenging unit when it asks students to "show the value" of the given number -aka-expanded form. We will continue to move through these lessons at the pace the students need, to gain a good understanding of this skill. In class we are using multiple strategies, practices, and manipulatives to gain strength and confidence with place value and number concepts.
We will be continuing through Reveal Math Unit 3. (place value, ones/tens place)
In this unit students will be:
- composing and decomposing tens and ones
- grouping ones into tens and ones to make it easier to count and name the number
- comparing and ordering 2-digit numbers and numbers on a number line using the >, <, = symbols.

Please note that Interims are a snapshot of how your child is doing in class at this time. This is not a “report card”.
This is just meant to give you an idea of where your child's academical progress is half way through the nine weeks grading quarter.
NEW LETTER GRADES & DEFINITIONS:
ACADEMIC GRADES:
BEHAVIOR GRADES:
Behavior grades in our classroom aligns with the daily behavior communication in the planner. While we've been adapting daily to expectations at school and during learning time in the classroom, there has been significant leniency. Now that we're well on our way and through the first half of this grading quarter, it will begin to more accurately reflect daily behavior choices.

NEW LETTER GRADES & DEFINITIONS:
ACADEMIC GRADES:
- M = Mastery: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill consistently (and independently).
- P = Progressing: The student acquires and applies the concept or skill frequently and needs additional teacher support at times. (This grade is where MOST students should be. If you see this grade then your child is showing adequate progression in that subject area. This is also the grade given when assignments are completed together in class.)

- SMILEY = OK day: student was spoken to multiple times to make better choices, one on one conference with student and teacher to discuss and strategize ways to resolve possible scenarios causing off task and/or distracting behavior choices in the classroom.
- CHECKMARK = CHALLENGING day: students that receive a checkmark will always be followed up with a note further explaining the most challenging part of the day. Students will ALWAYS have a discussion with the teacher before leaving at the end of the day to be able to explain and discuss the choices at home. No strategies or warnings or redirection or encouragement was effective in trying to help the student throughout the day.

W.I.N. time
This week we will begin rotating amongst the first grade classrooms during "W.I.N." time. (aka. RTI).
During this time students will be grouped accordingly to gain strength and confidence with the skills that support their reading progress. Each group will be giving students "What I (they) Need" to succeed in first grade.
*This happens first thing in the morning so it is important your child get to school on time so they can unpack and get ready for the day. It is understandable life happens but if possible, create a routine and be consistent to hopefully alleviate them from starting the day flustered.*

Classwork Grades
At this time, most work continues to be completed as a class. This means we do it together, take time to write answers and discuss what "completing work independently" looks like. If your child is still coming home with incomplete work, please remind them to pay attention so they can keep up in class. Some of the work coming home will be having the following "grades" (star, smiley, checkmark) to communicate what students are demonstrating in the classroom. |
Homework officially begins this week. We have been practicing and I'm hopeful the kids can come home and show you what we've done. Planners and their first "at home" homework will be coming home on Tuesday. As I told them, I will never send homework home without going over it first. Homework will always be a practice of skills we have already learned. If they don't know what to do, remind them to pay attention when we are going over it in class. I did let them know asking for help is okay but please allow them to try it and then just guide as needed. It will not benefit their confidence of the skills if answers are being given to them. Please check out the homework binder/planner and help them remember to put their homework sheet back in the front cover of the binder. We have set up a routine in class for them to turn it their homework when they arrive as part of unpacking and getting ready for the day.

Buckle up, here we go! Now that reviewing Kindergarten skills in Reading and Math is complete we are ready to get in to first grade benchmarks.
In Reading, students will now be working in their first -consumable reading workbook-. We are beginning with Unit 1 (once we complete each unit (typically 3-4weeks) then, students will bring those workbooks home.
Please use those books to review the skills and reading practices learned throughout the year.
In Math, we will continue to move forward with setting up the basic foundational skills as we enter computation. This curriculum is paced to give students time to explore their learning styles and grow effectively as we get into more complexed problem solving.

W.I.N. time
NEXT week (after Labor Day) students will begin rotating amongst the first grade classrooms during "W.I.N." time. (aka.

Reading:
Phonics/Phonemic Awareness: short vowels, consonant letters review
Comprehension: foundational reading skills
We are in the process of assessing what students retained from last year! Letters and sounds, blending CVC words, sight words, applying reading strategies, handwriting, and more. Therefore, we are also still in "review mode" during this Launch Unit of the reading curriculum. This week we will be introducing "workstations (aka- reading centers)" each day. We will be doing this whole group and together until they understand the expectations. THEN, they will be doing some of this independently while I am meeting with small groups. This is a big part of the first grade skills to help them make the most gains academically, so it is very important they are paying attention and following along.
Math:
We are moving right along into the next Reveal Math Unit 6.

Shoes (activity & recess)
It is VERY IMPORTANT that students wear/bring appropriate shoes EVERY DAY! Our PE-activity day for this 9weeks will be on Tuesdays. However, students also need these shoes for running around at recess too! Please be sure everyone at least has an appropriate pair in their backpacks to switch them out as needed.

Welcome to Mrs. Ward's First Grade Class
I am excited as we prepare to embark on a fun filled year through first grade. This year, your child will learn many important values that will stay with him/her for the rest of their lives. My goal is to work together with you to help your child succeed! With the instruction they receive at school and the encouragement they will receive from home to do their very best, I believe that every child will be very successful! Everything that we do in our class this year will be to prepare students for the next school year. I will do my best to teach students to see the stories while I read, get them eager to want to read even more and give them the tools to be able to reach their highest potential. During my time with your child we will be doing weekly literacy centers. It will make learning fun, hands-on interactive, and it will also give a sense of responsibility to follow through with the directions and rules given on a regular basis! It also helps keep them frequent and fluent in all subject areas of school which will help assist me in finding their strengths and weaknesses to build upon and help them excel! I know this is a high expectation, but I think if we work together with lots of encouragement, your child will soar! This will be a fabulous year in First Grade!
Communication
Email – [email protected]
Class Website – www.mrslward.weebly.com
I strive for very open communication between home and school. Please make sure you have provided a phone number and email address where you can be reached. During my time with you, I will send out a weekly newsletter to help keep you informed of the skills we are working on and reminders of important things that are coming up.
Please feel free to contact me at any time. Email is the best way to reach me. Please continuously check the classroom emails and website for updates on news, events, and classroom needs !
Attendance ~ Tardies ~ Absences
Students may enter the classroom beginning at 7:45am. If they are not in the classroom by 8:00am when the bell rings they will be considered "TARDY" and will have to go to the front office to receive a tardy slip. It is important for your child to be on-time to school every day to get a good start to their day. If your child is or will be absent please let me know.
Daily Folders / Planners
Folders will be sent home 5 days a week (Monday – Friday)
Please check the folders nightly as this will serve as a direct way to transport/communicate important information.
Help your child remember to bring their folders to school each day and make sure any important paperwork is taken care of. This will ensure communication between school and home.
Daily Snack
I am requesting that each family accepts responsibility to pack one small, nutritious snack for their child EVERY day. Students will only be getting about 10min. to eat their snack. Please remember to label any/all snack items with your child’s name. Snacks need to be something that does not require refrigeration and can easily be opened by your child. Examples of a good snack include: fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc. I do not keep any snacks here at school. NO CANDY, SODA, SWEETS, POTATO CHIPS OR CHOCOLATE are permitted during snack time.
*ALLERGY ALERT: We encourage you to send in snacks that are NUT FREE to maintain a SAFE environment for ALL students!
Lunch our lunch time is 11:55 - 12:25
Lunch may be packed and sent from home or purchased at school.
*Breakfast is FREE served every morning in the cafeteria starting at 7:30am.
Water Bottles
Please be sure to send a refillable water bottle with your child every day.
Behavior / Discipline
I believe every child is unique!! Having said that, far too often we expect all children to act , learn, and mature at the same rate and time. This is not reality nor would I want it to be. Each and every one of our children have good intentions and talents. My job is to nurture those things and improve their knowledge! I will work on developing and improving their weaknesses and encouraging support, to cultivate their strengths. High expectations will be set based on each child’s individual needs. I believe this is a team effort and there must be a flow of information between us in order to help your child reach his/her full potential.
BRAVO BOARD
This year we will using our bravo board for positive encouragement to be our personal best daily! Once classroom rules and expectations are learned as a class family, we will be holding each other accountable for being helpful, kind, honest, and humble to get the most out of our learning environment. Every day students will have multiple chances to earn beads to fill their pocket on the board. Once students receive 10 beads they will receive a "ticket" to bring home and will also earn them a reward coupon to use in the classroom! If students encounter days that are more of a struggle with multiple attempts to make better choices, then they will not receive beads for those moments and parents will also be notified by a note in the planner and/or email/phone call.
Homework <will begin in September> (I encourage you to take this time to create a nightly reading routine)
I respect your evening hours with your family and understand that extracurricular sports and activities are important. So, homework should not take more than 15-20 minutes (not counting nightly reading time of 15-20 min.) on any given evening. If you find your child is struggling with a new concept, please stop what you are doing and write a note on your child’s homework paper or in the planner. However, it is important for them to complete these quick tasks to solidify their understanding. If they do not understand, we will collaborate on ways to re-teach the concept.
Assessments (please note these are grade level requirements set by state/district and are subject to change)
• PSI (Phonics Screener for Intervention)- vowels, consonants, blends, diagraphs
• Running Records - reading fluency and comprehension
• Math - will be fluently checked after each unit/skill and at the end of each grading quarter
• FAST testing - Reading & Math
• iReady diagnostics - Reading and Math
• Writing - expectations will be upheld to the grade level standard of letter/number formations along with proper conventions and complete sentences.
Grading Policy - *please see the "class info" tab on for more info regarding classwork grades
At this time of the year, first grade students are still learning skills of independence. Therefore, several of the papers we do in class are NOT done independently yet. These papers are intended to be an opportunity for learning.
Only tests and a few other assignments are done completely independently and are given a grade.
The grading scale for first grade is:
ACHIEVEMENTS (Academics)
BEHAVIOR (Skills of Independence and Cooperation)
First Grade tends to be fast paced. Please note that time management is something we teach and practice daily. Every student is given more than ample time to complete assignments. If work is still incomplete, then please discuss and practice focus strategies to keep their attention on the task at hand. Unless officially documented through accommodations all students/grades will be upheld to the first grade standards.
Dismissal
Please make sure your child knows how he/she is to go home on a daily basis. If you need to change “the way your child gets home” please confirm the change each time! (written note /or/ email /or/ phone call to front office)
*It is preferred that this be in a note sent in the daily folder.
If you email me after 8:00a.m. on the day of the dismissal change, please also contact the front office.
It is not always guaranteed I will get to the email before the end of the day. It is best to send a note in your child’s folder and/or call the front office on or before the day of the dismissal change.
Birthdays
For your child’s birthday he/she may bring a special individually wrapped snack to share with the class. Please provide the same type of snack for every child in the class. (Some great ideas are hostess cupcakes, little bites, rice crispy treats, etc.)
*ALLERGY ALERT: We encourage you to send in snacks that are NUT FREE to maintain a SAFE environment for ALL students!
Dress Code
Students are required to wear sneakers for P.E. Please encourage your child to wear safe, appropriate shoes daily. Also, if there are laces on your child’s shoe, please help them learn how to tie those laces preferably in double knots to prevent frequency of loose laces making it unsafe for them and others. Shirt straps on tops need to be at least two fingers in width and long enough to cover midriffs. Also, shorts must be worn under skirts/dresses as we will be transitioning to and from carpet multiple times daily.
